“A few words. Silence, punctuated by the sound of an old radio. The work is marked by the rhythm of the cutting machine, while countless volumes lie stacked one upon another.
On the outskirts of Florence, an old garage is home to what may be the area’s last traditional bookbinding workshop. This is Fabio Innocenti’s Legatoria.”

The Book
Wizard
That's what some people call Fabio,
because behind his counter sits more than forty years of experience and craftsmanship, all devoted to preserving the past through restoration.
Book Restoration
"When I used to bind several volumes together, I worked with a cord frame — now I sew freehand, with tape, or with cord." Needle, thread, hammer, and glue remain his essential tools.

We reinforce the book's existing structure using the right materials, so it holds up for years to come.
Rebinding
When the stitching gives way, we carefully take the book apart to rebuild its structure:
We hand-resew each individual signature to restore stability and strength to the volume.
We reinforce the spine with new mull and headbands, giving the book back its natural opening and a structure built to last.

Cover & Customization
Conservation Approach We preserve the original spine whenever possible, to protect the book's authenticity. If it's too damaged, we replace it with cloth while keeping the original cover intact.
New Look If the original cover can no longer be saved — or if you'd simply like a different look — we'll give your book new life with a custom cover made from the materials in our atelier.
It's Time to Give That Book A New Life
Tell us what you'd like done in our contact section, and we'll walk you through the restoration options that fit best.
Keep in mind that we need to see the book in person to put together a quote — so we recommend stopping by the workshop for all the details you need.
The story of a book starts before the first page.
Planners
Bringing order to your ideas and room for your creativity.
Hand-stitched by the artisan.
Made to stay with you until the very last page.
Every planner can be personalized on request, or you can choose the one that's right for you from the artisan's curated collection.
Coming Soon!
Unlike machines, we use thicker cotton thread, add reinforcing mull to every volume, and rely on long-lasting glue. But most of all…
Every step is guided
by the artisan's careful eye.

FAQ
-
It depends on the type of binding you want: softcover binding starts at €10.00, while hardcover binding starts at €20.00. The final price will depend on the customizations you'd like, such as material choice, the type of printing you choose—whether that's standard ink or gold foil stamping.
We recommend filling out the form on the Contact Us page for more details.
A note from the bookbinder: these binding options aren't just for theses, they work for any book.
-
We work quickly to help you meet your university deadlines. Binding typically takes at least 2–3 business days. We recommend reaching out ahead of time so we can go over the details together.
-
Hardcover binding uses a rigid, covered board, closer to a traditional book.
Softcover binding uses a flexible cardstock cover, making it lighter and more versatile.
Both options come with black or colored inkjet lettering; hardcover binding is also available with gold or silver foil lettering.
-
We offer a range of options, including eco-leather, book cloth, and buckram (heavy-duty), available in various shades. You can browse the options in our gallery or see them in person at the workshop.
The print options depend on the cover material. Eco-leather covers can be finished with gold or silver foil lettering, while cloth and buckram covers are printed with inkjet in a range of colors. Softcover binding is only available with inkjet print.
If you haven't decided yet, don't worry: just contact us and we'll be happy to help you find the best option.
-
Before sending us your file, it's worth double-checking the print margins, logo quality, and title page layout.
If you'd rather not deal with that, you can simply send us the thesis file, and we'll take care of the technical preparation. We won't touch your text or content — we just prepare the file and title page for printing and binding.
A note from the bookbinder: for a proper binding, the inner and outer margins don't need to be set differently. They just both need to be wide enough to allow the book to open correctly.
-
It's up to you: you can leave the printing to us, or bring in your pages already printed.
If you'd like us to handle printing, just upload your file through the form on the ‘Tesi’ page (the page and the form are in Italian) or send it over by email. We'll take care of the printing, checking margins and layout against your university's requirements. If you need your thesis back as quickly as possible, we recommend bringing in pages that are already printed.
